OKLAHOMA CITY -- Despite the tough economy, gyms and fitness centers are seeing memberships boosts as people turn to focusing on their health for 2009.

"We took a couple weeks off during Christmas, you know ate all the turkey and bad stuff, and now we're back in the gym, going get it off," Brandi Sparks said.

Brandi and her friend Tonya are training for a triathlon.

"It's hard when you take a couple weeks off. You don't realize how much of a toll that takes, a couple weeks you think it's not a big deal, but it really is," Tonya Adkisson said.

While some people are pros, others are getting a fresh start with a New Year's resolution to lose weight. Gyms usually have a rush of new members at the beginning of the year, but not everyone sticks with it.

For one person, who joined this week two years ago, exercise is still part of his routine.

"Each day I make a decision. It's not a burden to come down here it, becomes a way of life," Michael Sprowso said.

Making a better way of life will give you big time physical and mental benefits like reducing stress and helping you sleep better.

If you can't afford a gym membership, you can always buy a workout video or take a walk outside.  Experts say many people break weight related New Year's resolutions because the goals seem unreachable. They say just losing five percent of your weight can have important health benefits.
