OKLAHOMA CITY -- Specialist Jason Hinton bravely fought for his country and in his battle against lung cancer. His family and friends remembered his life Saturday.
Jason was preparing to deploy to Iraq over a year ago with the 45th Infantry Brigade when he learned he had lung cancer. It recently spread to other parts of his body.
Despite the diagnosis, Hinton re-enlisted just eight days ago with the Army National Guard, but lost his fight against cancer on Monday.
"He kind of expected to get cancer at some point. We just didn't think so young because his father died in his early 40's from cancer, so he always knew it was a possibility. We just weren't expecting it a week after he turned 27," Jason's wife Samantha Laws-Rodriguez said. "Jason cared about everyone in his life, friends, family, military, strangers. His heart was just always open to everybody and he really, really cared about his country and everyone in it."
The 28-year-old is also survived by his mother and two siblings.
