EDMOND, Okla. -- A distinguished military veteran and well-known political figure stopped in the metro over the weekend to honor his heroes before Veterans Day.

Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North is thanking the men and women who have sacrificed for our country.

North spoke at the First Baptist Church of Edmond about the people he considers to be heroes.

"I can tell with young people that immediately conjures up an image of someone wearing a spandex suit and a cape, but my heroes don't wear spandex suits and capes. My heroes wear flack-jackets, combat boots, flight suits and they are remarkable young men," North said.

North also thanked s special Oklahoman, Randall Herrod, a man who came to his rescue during the Vietnam War.

"They hit us about 3 o'clock in the morning and everything was happening, and he happened to have been hit, knocked off a tank right by my fighting hole. So, I went out and got him and carried him back to fighting hole," Herrod said.

Herrod doesn't consider himself a hero, and neither do the veterans who came to hear North speak.

"Not anymore than the father that goes to work every day and takes his kids to church on Sunday and tries to be who God called him to be," Bob McDaniel said.

North is promoting a book he penned titled "American Hero." The novel chronicles the lives of those fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, the people North asks the rest of America to remember on Veterans Day.
