Gun sales increase as election nears

TULSA, Okla. -- Nationally, gun sales are up an estimated 10 percent this year, which could be due to growing worries about the upcoming election.

Despite the fact that both candidates have said they do not intend on taking people's guns away, gun owners aren't taking any chances.

Tom Pirrone, who regularly attends Medlock Firearms in Collinsville, has purchased several guns recently.

"I've purchased some, and plan on purchasing some more," Pirrone said. "It's a scary situation we're living in right now."

Pirrone said he's worried about the potential election of Barack Obama, who in his opinion would push tougher gun-control measures. Others in Collinsville agree the candidate would make it harder to purchase and own guns.

"Everyone is kind of in a panic, I think," said Medlock Firearms owner Becky Medlock. "Everyone is worried about the upcoming election. They're worried about what they're going to be able to buy in the future."

Specifically, Medlock said the fear is that gun enthusiasts won't be able to purchase semi-automatic assault rifles.

The ban on assault rifles expired in 2004, and some gun-owners worry lawmakers will reinstate the ban.

Medlock said the assault rifles have been selling well lately.

"I guess the common agenda is better buy one while you still can," said Jason Medlock of Medlock Firearms.

It's a philosophy Pirrone subscribes to, saying he won't wait to see if his worries become reality.

Instead, Pirrone said he'll continue stocking up on guns before Election Day.

"I don't think anybody has that right to take it away from us, and I believe there's going to be a big problem if anyone tries to do it," Pirrone said.

Some gun store owners in Texas said the sales of semi-automatic weapons have tripled. Experts claim consumers purchase firearms in times of uncertainly.
