An Oklahoma City family is cleaning up after a fire in their home woke them up early Tuesday morning.

When fire crews arrived at the home on NW 116th Street and Rockwell, black smoke was pouring from the roof. Three people who were inside escaped safely. Firefighters said the shingles made the fire hard to fight.

"The thing with the wood-shake roof, obviously it burns on the top and the bottom, so it's hard," Mike Kelley with the Oklahoma City Fire Department said. "You've got to get in the attic to get to it."

Firefighters contained the blaze to the roof and attic but the home does have extensive water damage. Damage is estimated at $200,000.

The cause is under investigation.
