OKLAHOMA CITY - After a wild week on Wall Street, the stock market is on hold for the weekend. But people aren't holding out for a less volatile market. Instead, they're crunching their budgets and turning to bargain hunting as a way to cut spending.

Shoppers said they can't do anything to control energy and food prices, but they can control where they shop for household necessities.

At the Salvation Army families are looking for bargains. Thrift stores like the Salvation Army and Goodwill have seen an increase in sales because of the economy.

"The economy is the main reason that people shop here," Jane Cook said.

Cook, like many others, is tightening her budget belt these days.

"A lot of people I know are coming to second hand stores, and they never used to come to these places," Cook said.

Many families are turning to these stores to get more value for their buck.

"We have to save a little bit more, and watch the spending that we do and only buy necessary goods that we need," customer Lynn McMorris said.

Shoppers are buying clothes, shoes and even furniture to save any way they can.

"I think the economic situation is the reason why people are coming here to shop, because people like new stuff," Cook said. "They like to feel like this is the first time they had it on their body or worn it, and nobody's going to have it."

Even though sales are up at these thrift stores, donations are down because people are struggling to stretch their dollar these days.
