NORMAN, Okla. -- They may not regulate Wall Street, but Oklahoma's Corporation Commission does oversee companies that directly impact the pocketbooks of state residents, including oil, gas and utilities.

According to a NEWS 9 poll, the two candidates running for the short-term seat are separated by only four percentage points, and almost a third of voters remain undecided.

Jim Roth and Dana Murphy hoped to sway those voters Wednesday as they debated on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.

"Commissoner Roth presented a lot of ideas and solutions, whereas I believe Judge Murphy presented more challenges and problems rather than solutions to this problem," OU student Alexandra Glovas said.

The debate covered a list of concerns from OU students.

High gas prices led to the issue of alternative fuel. Another main topic was energy costs and how each Oklahoman could save.

"She brought up the wind, the solar and bringing different tax incentives to different things to private businesses and homes," OU student Kaleb Potter said.

Students also got the chance to ask questions after the debate. Students asked about improvements on roads, bridges and the environmental costs on varying energy sources.

There is another race for the long-term Corporation Commission seat. Charles Gray is running against incumbent Jeff Cloud.
