EDMOND, Okla. -- Edmond Police are ticketing drivers whose car windows are too darkly tinted.

"It's no less important than any other law for motor vehicles," Officer James Hamm said. "We've chose to issue warnings over the last several months, but at some point we have to start enforcing the ordinance by citations."

Police began ticketing drivers who violate the city's window tint law, which mirrors a state law that's rarely enforced.

Officers test windows to see if they're too dark. The front windows must allow at least 25 percent light in, and the back must allow in at least 10 percent.

"I just bought the truck...so if it's illegal, like I say, I'll have it fixed," said Ronnie Barnett who was issued a citation for his dark, tinted windows.

Auto Gear charges around $150 to remove tint and replace it with lighter tint.

"We've had people come in and ask in regards to the tint laws," Auto Gear employee Kelly Lee said.

Not everyone plans to make a change.

After being pulled over twice for windows tinted at five percent, Jay Snow received a $144 ticket.

"Personally, I think it's a way for cities to make more money. It's just another ticket to write in my opinion," Snow said. "It's cheaper than some speeding tickets I've gotten."

Snow said he'll keep driving with this tint, taking his chances.

Police said the reason for the law is not to make more money, but about safety. Officers need to be able to see inside cars.

Edmond Police said they will not be targeting people with window tint. Anyone can bring a car to the police department and they'll check it.
