Today's blog is going to be a ‘thank you' to a newspaper reporter in the small town of Ada.
Randy Mitchell helped us when we hit a wall while covering the arrests of two women and a member of the United States Military. Three trio are accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill the man's wife.
When I arrived at work Friday afternoon, the assignment desk handed me the few details we had at that time and I immediately called the Pontotoc County District Attorney to set up an interview. We tried to rush down south, but was greatly delayed by the traffic backup on I-35 south of Norman.
We finally arrived in Ada shortly after 4:00 p.m. and interviewed the D.A. who gave us some information, but not nearly enough to put together a good TV news story. We had no names. No names of the suspects. No name of the victim. No name of the serviceman.
We called around to anybody and everybody we knew and we were having very little luck until I called the Ada Evening News newspaper. That's when Mr. Mitchell gave us the names of the two suspects and from there were able to track down mug shots, addresses, family members and enough elements to complete our story.
So... here's to you Mr. Mitchell. A big ol' THANK YA from the gang at News 9.
