NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sam Noble Museum of Natural History has an after school program that gives children a place to go learn while having fun.

Spike's Club is geared toward age groups between first grade and fifth grade. Children participate in science experiments, crafts and different scientific concepts, such as learning about different types of eggs.

Jes Cole, an educator at the museum, said the club is based on programs that are offered during the summer.

"Our summer programs are so popular, that a lot of kids just wanted something to do like that. We go out into the field and we study dinosaurs and science," Cole said. "They wanted something to do during the school year that was just as fun and just as educational as our summer programs."

There is an underlining purpose intended for the children who participate in the program.

"The plan is kind of learning, but also it's kind of so fun that maybe they don't know they're learning, which is really good," Cole said. "A lot of kids do like to learn and they're very enthusiastic about what we're doing. They like to have fun too, but they do like to learn, so it's a good balance."

Spike's Club members are allowed to take advantage of the museum in such a way that not many people get to experience.

"We can go in after hours so there's nobody else here. It's kind of like a little night at the museum type experience," Cole said. "We can go in and just kind of look through the galleries and kind of apply the galleries to what we're doing in our class."
