OKLAHOMA CITY -- Jack Werner has seen the need for blood in the worst way.

The Oklahoma City veteran started giving blood as an Army Ranger in the Vietnam War.

His drill sergeant at bootcamp ordered him to do it, but after landing in Vietnam he quickly saw the need.

Since returning from the war, Werner has continued to give blood every two months. He proudly sports his 10-gallon donor pin from the Oklahoma Blood Institute.

"Most of us don't have the chance or wants to be the hero that runs into the fiery building or breaks up the robbery, but we can do things that make a difference in people's lives," Werner said. "I don't know a better thing we can do than give blood regularly."

NEWS 9 Blood Drive

NEWS 9 will host a blood drive Wednesday with the Oklahoma Blood Institute.

Donors can give blood from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the station, 7401 N Kelley Ave.

There will be muffins for early bird donors and pork sandwiches, compliments of the Oklahoma Pork Council, at lunch time.
