OKLAHOMA CITY -- Volunteers from the Internal Revenue Service and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance will be available Tuesday at the Shepherd Mall to assist in filling out stimulus payment forms.

An estimated 13,000 people in Oklahoma County have not filed tax returns for the 2007 year, which have to be filed in order to receive a tax rebate, or Economic Stimulus Payment.

"These are people who ordinarily do not file a tax return," IRS spokesman David Stell said. "They don't have a deadline. They didn't miss an April 15 deadline, and there's still time for them if they get their tax return filed by October 15."

The rebate checks were distributed starting last spring, after Congress passed a $150 billion economic stimulus package. Individuals receive $300 and couples filing jointly receive $600. The IRS also announced the availability of a new online calculator on IRS.gov to help people determine if they are eligible to receive an economic stimulus payment and if so, for what amount.

An estimated $24 million is lost in Oklahoma by those who fail to claim their rebates.

The volunteers will be on site from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. near the Social Security office. All assistance will be provided free of charge for those requesting an Economic Stimulus Payment.
