Tulsa Boys Home hosts art show

TULSA, Okla. -- An art show is offering boys the opportunity to learn the value of patience and creativity.  For eight summers, the Tulsa Boys Home has conducted an arts program, ending the summer with a grand finale art show and sale. 

The boys living in the home have been preparing for the Summer Arts Show and Sale at the Tulsa Boys Home.

"This is a bowl or whatever someone wants it to be," said Wes.

Wes' bowl is one of the pieces he made during this summer's program.

Karen Payne, an art teacher from Mannford, was one of five instructors for the home.

"Every year I've been surprised at some of the things they've done.  A lot of the boys are really talented," said Payne.

Ken Callen is the operations coordinator at the Tulsa Boys Home.  He said art is a way of helping the boys work through some of their issues.

"It takes a lot of time, detail, and work to do these things," said Callen.

Callen claims producing the art teaches the young men patience.  One of the residents, Jacob, said it took almost two weeks to finish one of his projects.

"I painted it with dark paint at the bottom as I came up I used water in the brush...to thin it out and look lighter at the top," said Jacob.

The finished pieces include drawings, paintings and weavings among others. Much of the art is for sale.

The boys are learning about art and about the value of their own creativity.

The show and sale will be held Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Tulsa Boys Home.
