Staff and Wire Reports

SAND SPRINGS, Okla.  -- U.S. Highway 412 just west of Sand Springs is closed after a truck hauling bleach and sulfuric acid went off the highway and caught fire.

Authorities said the driver suffered minor injuries and there is no immediate health danger from the fire because the chemical cloud is traveling straight up in the air.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lieutenant George Brown said officials are recommending residents within 2 miles of the scene evacuate their homes.

A blown tire may have caused the crash, troopers said.

The driver of the truck told troopers he heard a pop just before the accident.  The driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The truck is owned by Brainerd Chemicals.  Company officials said the truck was carrying:

  • one 225-gallon container of sulfuric acid,
  • two 55-gallon drums of sulfuric acid,
  • four 55-gallon drums of sodium hypochlorite (bleach), and
  • 10 30-gallon drums of sodium hypochlorite (bleach).

Firefighters decided to let the fire burn itself out because of the chemicals.
