As a popular Cartoon Network character says, "It's hooooot in Topeka!" Or Oklahoma City. Or pretty much anywhere in the eastern U.S.
Oklahoma City had yet to hit 100 degrees this year through July 20, but that's not terribly unusual. As a matter of fact, Oklahoma City has had 20 years on record (since 1897) that never hit the century mark. The full list of years is at the bottom of this blog. Data is from the Oklahoma Climatological Survey.
Sunday, July 20 Oklahoma City reached 99 degrees. The past several days were the hottest Oklahoma City has been all year. Before this heat wave started the 18th, 96 was the highest high reached in May, June, and July.
Oklahoma City finally reached 100 degrees Monday, July 21. On average, Oklahoma City has ten 100-degree-days a year, with eight of those occurring in July and August. So we're in the ripe time for hot hundred days.
I worked in my garden a little this weekend to keep things tidy and the weeds under control, but it doesn't take long to feel the effects of the heat. For information on staying safe in the heat, click here.
