EDMOND, Okla. -- While food and gas prices continue to increase some families are finding they are stretched to the limit.

Now they'll have to shell even more money to get their kids ready for the new school year. A metro church is helping to ease the burden.

School supplies can be very expensive for any family, especially if you have a lot of children. Some lucky families in Edmond won't have to pay a thing.

"There are about 20 boxes that are here with crayons and colored pencils and two pocket portfolios and pens and paper," Jeff Wilson with Henderson Hills Baptist Church said.

Wilson is on a mission. He's trying to get enough school supplies to help out 1,000 elementary school children in Edmond.

"Last year there were around 2,000 that participated in the national school lunch program in Edmond...and that's out of around 9,000 students enrolled in the Edmond elementary school system," Wilson said.

The church put out the call last weekend and already donations are rolling in. For the past three years, the church helped only its members, but this year they decided to expand the program.

"We just really feel like the Lord is leading us to try to reach out to the community," Wilson said.

If there is more than one child in the family the costs can quickly add up. So, the church has also enlisted the help of Edmond retail stores like Wal-Mart and Mardel as collection sites.

"We want to help the community and help the teachers, help the kids and all the families that shop with us on a daily basis," Janet Rose with Mardel said.

Helping those in need is what is what it is all about.

"Jesus did that, the Good Samaritan did that and we want to do the same thing," Wilson said.

The supplies will be handed out on August 13 at Henderson Hills Baptist Church. All parents need to do is show proof that they live in Edmond.
