Choose a backpack that is appropriate for the child's age and size. The backpack should weigh no more than 15% of the child's body weight.
The pack should sit in the curve of the lower back. It should never reach more than four inches below the waist.
Make sure the backpack has well-padded shoulder straps. Always use both shoulder straps and if there is a waist trap, use it.
Only pack items that are necessary. Load the heaviest items close to the child's back. Also, look for backpacks with more compartments. The compartments help distribute the weight so it's not too heavy in particular area.
