The heartbreaking part of this story is that a mother of 4 doesn't have a car! She's still making payments on it and has insurance. She told me she thought she was doing everything right. She built up her credit, saved up and bought a reliable car.
But because she had to use all her savings for a rental car (She had to take her child to regular doctor appointments), she put off buying other necessities. She just moved into a house and she was about to by a fridge when all this happened. Now she doesn't have the money... 4 kids and no fridge!!! She also doesn't have the money to buy new shoes. That wouldn't be a huge deal except for the fact that her old shoes are from a factory job and they're steel toed... meaning she walks several miles each day with 6 pound weights in her shoes!
The insurance company talked to me at first. But when I called back (and left 4 messages) explaining that the repair shop said they needed more money, no one returned my call.
I personally made a call to the Oklahoma Insurance Department. They have a consumer advocate division and as soon as Afton (the mother) calls them with a complaint, they'll work to help her. They offer this service to anyone with insurance who is having problems.
Their number is: 1-800-522-0071
I will definitely let you know what happens. Hopefully the two (insurance co & repair shop) can work quickly to get this mother back her car!
