EDMOND, Okla. -- Teaching our kids how to be safe in everyday situations is going to be a bit easier soon.

Firefighters in Edmond are building a Children's Safety Village.

Kids are prone to accidents, so when the time comes when they may be in danger of getting hurt, whether it's on a bicycle or in a swimming pool, firefighters want them to be extra careful, by knowing exactly how to stay safe.

"For years and years the fire service traditionally taught ‘Stop, drop and roll,'" Tim Wheeler, Edmond Chief of Fire Prevention said. "What do you do if your clothes catch on fire? What number do you call? Now we've moved to an all risk program where we're teaching children about firearm safety, fire prevention, burn prevention, motor vehicle safety."

They're planning on teaching kids how to prevent accidents, in a kids sized town, where they've just broken ground.

At a two acre site at the Edmond Fire Department, you'll soon see the Children's Safety Village.

"It's going to be a unique opportunity for children's all hazard safety education," Gil Harryman, Edmond Fire Department Fire Chief, said. "The only one like it in the state of Oklahoma."

Everything in the town is down sized for the kids. So a building in real life will actually be only five-eighths of the actual height.

The plans show a miniature fire station, police department and city hall. Greens, a park, and water surround the small town.

The town is a place where firefighters hope children will be able to apply the safety lessons they're taught.

"You have no excuse not to take your kids there and let them learn as much as they can to keep them safe," mother of children participants Adrienne Sublette said.

The ultimate goal is to apply those lessons in real life.
