Airman receives highest honors

MIDWEST CITY, OKLA. -- The U.S. Coast Guard presented one of its highest honors to an airman on Tuesday at Tinker Air Force Base for rescuing a woman and her two-year-old son four years ago.

Airman 1st Class Joshua P. Johnson received a Gold Lifesaving Medal Tuesday morning for rescuing a trapped woman and her son as their automobile sank into the Arkansas River near Tulsa in December 2004. Alongside Johnson, Robert Ewens received a Silver Lifesaving Medal for his heroic actions that day.

U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Loren M. Reno and commander of Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center and U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Timothy Close were at the ceremony to present the awards.

The Gold Livesaving Medal is the highest level awarded and the Silver Lifesaving Medal is the next highest award, a press release from Tinker Air Force Base read.
