Haskell man charged with injuring toddler

MUSKOGEE, Okla. -- Muskogee County prosecutors have filed a child abuse by injury count against a Haskell man after a 2-year-old girl under his care was raped and developed a genital deformity.

According to the charge, Alfonso B. Smith failed to seek any medical attention for the toddler, who had contracted a sexually transmitted disease from being raped and her genitals seriously bruised.

Muskogee Police investigator Shannon Crary wrote in an affidavit that the child contracted hepatitis, vaginal warts and vaginal trauma. Smith allegedly didn't seek medical treatment for the childÂ’s symptoms during a period of about seven weeks.

The affidavit states that he also denied the child’s biological father visitation.

Smith remains in the Muskogee County jail.

If convicted, he could receive a life imprisonment sentence and be fined up to $5,000, according to court documents.
