The Oklahoma City school district took a step forward Tuesday as former Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys was named the school board's new chairman.

It's been almost four months since Cliff Hudson resigned from the chairman's post as part of an agreement that had embattled Superintendent John Porter to also resign.

Humphreys said this is a critical time to join the board.

"I think the number one priority for the school district right now is to select a new superintendent, to hire a person that has the vision to move this district forward, to bring Maps for Kids to a successful conclusion, but to stay," Humphreys said. "We need a superintendent who, five years from now will still be here, and five years after that will still be here."

Humphreys said, although state law doesn't allow him to become a voting member of the board until August, he will be very involved in the superintendent search.
