'Good Samaritan' says officer was out of line

A Pontotoc County woman claimed her actions as a 'Good Samaritan' got an unlikely reaction from police.

Susan Holmes, a registered nurse for 20 years, witnessed a car crash and stopped to give first aid, she said. She had a hard time explaining to her children what happened after she stopped to help those involved in the crash, she said.

"I've always told them the police are there to help us," Holmes said.

Holmes and her children witnessed a woman being hit by a car.

"I saw the whole thing, she went into the air and landed in a clump on the highway," Holmes said.

Holmes called 911 and administered first aid until help began to arrive, she said. She said at some point, a female detective form the Ada Police Department arrived.

According to Holmes, the detective became angry.

"She said 'back up,' and she was in my face screaming, and so I backed up," Holmes said. The police officer then began using vulgar language directed at Holmes, she said.

Holmes filed a complaint against the officer. A spokesperson for the police department said an investigation is underway, but technically, nothing illegal was done.

"I'm such a nerd. I'm such a square. I don't cuss. I don't say anything outlandish," Holmes said. "I was just down there holding this woman trying to comfort her."

A man that witnessed the incident said the officer was clearly out of line.

The woman involved in the car crash was released from the hospital and recovering at home, authorities said.
