The seventh annual National Free Comic Book Day is Saturday May 3.

One day a year comic book retailers in the United States and across the world give away comic books free to anyone who comes into their store.

Brian Berlin owns New World Comics in Oklahoma City. He said Saturday is going to be busy, but fun.

"It's hands down the biggest day of the year. We're going to have people in costumes," Berlin said. "We're going to have some games and we're going to have some giveaways. Just all sorts of fun."

Comic books have been read and collected by both young and old. Berlin said there is a simple reason why comics have remained so popular.

"Comics again are just so perfect because you don't need any electricity to have them," Berlin said. "You can take them anywhere. If you didn't pay your comic book bill, you still have your comics. At work, if you have some down time, you can enjoy your comic book."

Promoting comics isn't the only thing free comic book day is about. Comic shops want more people to take up reading.

"Some people use it as a tool for helping the illiterate because of the word and picture association," Berlin said. "It's the perfect form of media because it has your words, you pictures, and everyone can enjoy it."

According to Berlin, nothing compares to witnessing a child's face as they discover comic books for the first time.

"It's the best feeling in the world. It just makes me feel like all this that I'm doing, all this hard work that I'm putting into it is worth wild," Berlin said. "It's something that I've always enjoyed, and I'm passing that on to someone else."
