Ellis County fire scorches 37 square miles

Posted: Updated:

ARNETT, Okla. (AP) -- Firefighters in northwest Oklahoma are putting out hot spots today after a grass fire burned 37 square miles of range land yesterday.

Arnett Fire Chief Lewis Jennings says the fire started about noon Sunday southeast of Arnett in Ellis County and burned some farm equipment and likely killed some cattle.

Three firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion but no serious injuries are reported.

Jennings says more than 200 firefighters from Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas helped fight the fire before bringing it under control about 9:30 last night.
