Social Security issues debit cards

It's a new alternative to getting a paper check in the mail. Starting next week Oklahomans can receive Social Security money on a debit card.

The Treasury Department is rolling out the debit card program in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and Alabama. The cards are cheaper to produce and easier to use for retiring baby boomers, said Larry Jones with the Social Security Administration.

"It's really just the next step in our technology," Jones said. "It's really something that's designed largely for the Baby Boom generation.

Baby Boomers make up a 77 million people nationwide.

"This is a generation that is so big that we're going to have to have alternative methods for them to file and take care of business other than just coming into a regular Social Security office," Jones said.

Each check the Social Security Administration sends out costs 90 cents to distribute. The debit card will cost 9 cents, Jones said.

"Now, we're opening up into a broad new avenue of service for them," Jones said.
