OKC/Metro Area Going To The Dogs

Posted: Updated:

Dogs have been called "man's best friend," but any pet owner will tell you, that's not exactly true.

They're family members.  They go on vacations, have scheduled play dates with others dogs in the neighborhoods and spawned an industry of services to the tune of $43 billion a year.

So imagine how traumatic it is to have a pet was stolen from your home, front yard or even your car.  That's exactly what happened to a veterinarian in Cleveland County.

The good doctor told me he was having dinner with his wife and his two chihuahuas were stolen from his vehicle that was parked right in front of the restaurant.  His wife remains inconsolable and he remains in shock.

Animal activists told me pet theft is quite common. Dogs are often sold to research labs for top dollars and some even make it on the black market for use as bait in dogfighting circles.  (Tune in to News 9 this May for more on this story.)

Police tell me this crime while common, is under-reported. But they do recommend having a dog microchipped by a licensed vet.  It can be expensive, but it could save you a lot of pain and anguish.
