History could be made April 19, when an Oklahoma-bred Paint horse, named "Got Country Grip," will try to become the first horse in North America to win 17 consecutive races.

The 5-year-old gelding tied the record in March by breezing past the field at Remington Park, which improved his record to 16 wins in 16 races.

Brandon Parum, the horse's trainer said he was pretty sure Got County Grip was fast, but even he was surprised when the victories started stacking up.

"He's never tasted defeat, even in a work race," Parum said. "He's never been behind, ever. He knows it, too."

The modern world record for consecutive wins stands at 17, held by a thoroughbred from Hong Kong. Parum, who lives in Jones, Okla., said his unbeaten horse will try to match that mark at Remington Park.

"We just gotta go one race at a time. That's the way we done the first 16, and just try to treat all just the same," Parum said.

Got County Grip set numerous paint records at Remington already, including during a trial heat at Fair Meadows.

"A lot of people were saying at the time that the clock must have been messed up or something," Parum said.

Got Country Grip returned two weeks later in the finals to run faster, breaking the quarter horse records set in the trials. The record-breaking horse then came back two weeks after the finals to break his own record.

Got Country Grip is scheduled to race in the $25,000 Mr. Lewie Memorial Handicap, on April 19.
