Windy Tuesday With High Fire Danger

Posted: Updated:

By News9 Meteorologist Carrie Rose

A developing low pressure system to Oklahoma's west combined with high pressure to Oklahoma's east is making for strong, gusty southerly winds Tuesday across the state.  The highest gusts up to 55 mph are expected in northwest Oklahoma, while the rest of the state can expect gusts to 30 and 40 mph.  A Wind Advisory is in effect until 2 a.m. Wednesday for the following counties: Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Ellis, Woodward, Major, Roger Mills, Dewey, Custer, and Blaine.  The Wind Advisory will be in effect until only 8 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties: Grant, Kay, Garfield, Noble, Kingfisher, Logan, Payne, Beckham, Washita, Caddo, Canadian, Oklahoma, Greer, Kiowa, and Comanche.

In addition to the strong winds, plenty of vegetation is still dormant in the state despite recent heavy rains and greening.  Strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm afternoon temperatures will make for high fire danger in much of the state.  A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. for the areas especially prone to rapidly spreading wildfires.  News9 Storm Tracker Marty Logan went to the scene of a wildfire near Fargo in northwest Oklahoma this afternoon around 4 p.m.  As of 4:45 p.m., Marty says the fire was mostly contained.  Mostly grasslands were burned.

Winds will continue to be strong from the south Wednesday at 20 to 30 mph, before a cold front moves through the state late Wednesday and Thursday.  Winds will shift to the north at 15 to 30 mph, and the front will bring a decent chance for showers and thunderstorms for the state.  Some of these storms may become severe Thursday.

Looking toward the weekend, high temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 70's, nearing 80 by the start of the next workweek.
