STROUD, Okla. - School board members will vote Tuesday on a proposal to build a private prison in Stroud.

State law requires board's approval because the prison is slated to be built within one mile of four school campuses. Parents said that's too close to their children and they are demanding the prison be built elsewhere.  The board will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, one week sooner than expected.

Steve Beck said he's opposed to the prison.

"I don't want my kids to worry about every time there is a siren that goes off, every time there is a helicopter that goes overhead," Beck said. "What happens if there is a riot?

The facility would be a medium-security prison with maximum security standards, City Manager Steve Gilbert said.

"I have a pretty high-level of confidence that we won't see a lot of escapes, if any," Gilbert said.

City officials will host a town hall meeting about the prison at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. Gilbert said the location is subject to change because citizens have expressed concern that the room is too small.

The city manager said if the school board votes against the proposed location, the city has another site for the prison.
