Send In The Clowns

Send In The Clowns

Any television news personality will tell you public appearances are part of the job. Most news operations, including News 9, stress the importance of giving back to the community through charity, volunteer work and emceeing events.

So when I was asked to serve as an honorary ringmaster for the 65th Annual India Center Shrine Circus, I jumped at the chance.  As a kid growing up in New York, I always enjoyed the circus and went to just about everyone that came to town. Barnum and Bailey, UniverSoul, you name it, I've seen it.

But never up close. And the Shriners didn't disappoint.

From the moment I entered the State Fairgrounds, everyone made me feel welcome. Jokes were cracked and pranks were pulled, each one funnier than the last. One of the  jokes included everyone I met asking me my name over and over again (I was filling in for News 9's Doug Warner who was slated to attend, but had to bow out because of a prior engagement). Apparently, the Shriners had a plaque engraved with Doug's name.

But when I went out on the floor and completed my ringmaster duties, the group presented me with a plaque that had my name engraved on it.  Turns out, they knew my name all along, but they were just pulling my leg.

I had a great time with the Shriners and I urge anyone to check out their circus when it comes back to town. I promise; they won't disappoint.
