Sally Kern Vs. Britney Spears

I have a confession.

I'm one of ‘those people' who thrive off of celebrity news.  I'm a TMZ.com junkie.  I watch  "Entertainment Tonight".  I read those magazines.  If I wasn't so happy with my job here at News 9, I'd quit, go buy a camera and join the rest of the paparazzi that seek out Britney Spears for a living.

This goes through my head everyday (yes, I need help. I know), but today I realized I may already be getting some training for my so-called dream job.  I call it Kern-watch

Yup, while the rest of the world is on Brit-watch, I just realized today the Oklahoma City media is still on Kern-watch!  We're monitoring Oklahoma Representative Sally Kern's every move, her every word and we're still turning stories on her comments that compared gays to terrorists two weeks after we first broke told you about that now infamous speech.

Earlier today I was tipped off that she was invited to be the guest speaker at a republican student organization's meeting at the University of Central Oklahoma.  I raced to the producer and he told us to go check it out... just in case something happens.

Good call because the other TV stations were there along with newspaper reporters and photographers and a dozen or so students armed with audio recorders.
Kern immediately addressed the unwanted attention by telling the group she had hoped this would be a low-key, no thrills meeting but no such luck.  Word of the Kern's arrival prompted extra police to be on campus and members of the gay community showed up just in time.

Kern briefly touched on the gay comments during her speech and said becoming a house hold name isn't want she wanted.  "It just came my way", she said.

Following the speech the Q & A session focused on what we all showed up for.   Those comments.

There was no shouting.  No protesting.  No foul language and no arrests.  She came, she spoke and she left.

So, do we do this again?  Do we (the media) continue showing up at every speaking engagement she is invited to?  At what point do we call it quits and say enough is enough.  The story is told and now it's time to move on.

Well, don't look at me for an answer.  Remember, I'm the guy who is wondering if Britney Spears is at the mall right now or if she just stopped off at a 7/11 for a burrito with extra cheese.
