I'm asked a lot of questions in the field and a common question is "how did you find out this was happening?"

We get news from a variety of sources.  It can come from traffic we hear over a police scanner, faxes, e-mails, viewers who phone in a tips, anonymous sources, the internet and news wires.   News 9 covered what I think is a big story and we credit a long time News 9 viewer who tipped us off.   Earlier today Tommy Richards, an assignment editor at News 9, sent me this e-mail:

The above is the video

I spoke with the Speaker of the House's secretary and she said that even though in the video the woman says she tried to introduce a bill last session saying parents had to be notified about clubs their kids joined to keep them from becoming homosexuals, they could not identify her w/o a picture.

I am a straight woman,  but i believe bigotry like this should not be tolerated, especially from our elected officials.

I thought to myself, "wow."  This is a story.

Did State Representative Sally Kern really say gays were more of a threat than terrorism?  Do she really say gays "go after two-year olds"?   Immediately I called Representative Kern's office and the response was "we have to check with council to see what we can and can't say."

I went to our managers and producers who were also looking into this and we knew a big story was unfolding before our eyes.
We assigned two reporters to this.

News9.com's Audrey Esther was assigned to cover the "nuts and bolts" of this story ... the who, what, when and where.  I was assigned to cover another angle and went to a Sexual Identity and Spirituality Conference in Edmond for reaction.
I think we did an excellent job at getting reaction from both sides of this debate and we'll continue to follow this story as it develops over the weekend.

These are the stories I enjoy the most.  They affect all people, they make good debate and hopefully our stories will make you stop and think.

Big thanks to Sue for the tip !
