Seattle proposes arena renovations to keep Sonics

Posted: Updated:

The city of Seattle is making last-second attempts to keep the NBA SuperSonics team from moving to Oklahoma City.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels unveiled a $300 million renovation plan for KeyArena on Thursday. He also confirmed reports that a group of Seattle businessmen, including Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was interested in buying the Sonics and paying half the cost of renovation.

Sonics owner and Oklahoma City business man Clay Bennett has repeatedly said the team is not for sale.

"Next month the relocation committee of the NBA is going to vote on Clay Bennett's desire to move to Oklahoma City," said former Sen. Slade Gorton, who was hired by Seattle to ensure the Sonics stay at KeyArena for the duration of their contract. "Without an alternative from the city of Seattle, that application is almost certain to be granted."

Key Washington lawmakers said Seattle's efforts are probably too late. The lawmakers said they plan to adjourn next week without considering Seattle's proposal.
