Less expensive generic medications have slowed the growth of prescription drug costs, said .

The cost is down to its lowest level since at least 1996.

While total spending still increased last year, the average price of a generic drug fell more than 3 percent.

In 2007, generic medicines added up to 64 percent of prescriptions filled.
