Children advocates' offices vandalized, police say

Authorities are investigating a case of vandalism against the Court Appointed Special Advocates for children building (CASA).

Vandals broke in over the weekend and trashed several administrative offices at a building on North Santa Fe.

Investigators don't know when the break-in happened. CASA officials found out about it when they went to the offices Sunday. Now, police are trying to find the person or persons responsible for the vandalism.

The pictures tell the story of what workers found Sunday evening around 6:00 p.m. Papers were strewn all over the office and computers knocked off the desks.

"Frightening, very, very startled," Executive Director of CASA, Anna Naukum said. "Just make you very unsure."

Naukam took these photos with her digital camera for insurance purposes. It's not the first time her office has been targeted. A few years ago, thieves made off with $4,000 worth of computer equipment. But this time, theft may not have been the motive.

"There was very expensive equipment that they never even touched," Naukum said. "Things like iPod players and MP3 players."

And just last week, a bullet came through the window of one of the offices. Police don't believe the recent vandalism and the gunshot are related, but Naukum is now taking precautions.

"We're having an alarm system installed," Naukum said. "I have people coming up today to take care of that. We're going to have to spend money to change all the locks on the doors."

According to Naukum, investigators believe whoever was behind the crime may have gained entry into the building late Friday night.

CASA officials tell NEWS 9 these offices are administrative and there were no personal case files housed in that facility.

If you have any information on this vandalism, you're asked to call police.
