Hargis to become OSU president sooner

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Brad Henry said he will sign legislation Thursday allowing Burns Hargis to immediately become president of Oklahoma State University.

House Bill 2297, which was given final approval earlier this week, reduces the time Hargis must wait before being able to officially take over his presidential duties.

Hargis was named OSU president in December 2007, after serving on the OSU A & M Board of Regents.

However, due to his service on the regents panel, Hargis could not officially take over as president until a one-year waiting period after his regents resignation was met. Under the old legislation, Hargis would not have been able to assume his new position until July.
