A man is dead after police say he drove into on-coming traffic on a busy metro highway.

Witnesses said the man was beating a woman while driving northbound on the Broadway Extension. Oklahoma City police said it's what they call a "rolling disturbance."

"They do occur, but they usually don't end in a tragedy like this," said Lt. Roger Bratcher of the Oklahoma City Police.

An officer tried to pull the driver over after another motorist called 911 to report the assault, but police said the suspect refused to stop.

"The suspect exited Broadway on the off-ramp to Hefner, then lost control of the truck then back southbound in the northbound lanes, getting on to Broadway Extension in the wrong direction," Bratcher said.

The suspect flipped the truck and was hit by at least two other cars. The driver of a Volvo was taken to a hospital in fair condition. The female in the suspect's truck was taken in critical condition. The suspect, who police said is to blame for all this, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not said what the relation was between the suspect and the female in his truck. Their identities have not been released.

Police said because of a department policy, they stopped chasing the suspect once he started driving into on-coming traffic.
