A dust up over dirt

A Nicoma Park woman says she's tired of Oklahoma County dumping debris in her neighborhood.

Diana Wheatley said the county's dozers are creating a lot of noise and she doesn't understand why they have to dump in her neighborhood.

Craig Wallace is the Oklahoma County District 1 Superintendent. He said the land is private property. With the owner agreeing to take the land fill, the county can cut costs.

"The only reason why that property is being used is to save tax payer dollars," Wallace said. "The shorter the distance we can haul, the more appropriate it is for us and our tax payers."

Wheatley doesn't see any benefit to the dusty mess left in her neighborhood. Besides, no one ever gave her the dirt on the county's free dirt.

"Where's the sign up list, because I have a lot of low lying property in the back that I could have filled in," Wheatley said.

The county said it has several sites where they dump non-hazardous things like soil and debris from the ice storm.

If Wheatley or anyone wants to get in on the free dirt, they can contact the county for information.

Since our visit, the county said it will work harder to keep the noise and dust down in Wheatley's neighborhood.
