Sony's Blu-ray wins DVD war

TOKYO - Toshiba is pulling the plug on its HD DVD product line. The move means Blu-ray disc technology is the winner in the format battle for next generation DVDs.

Toshiba's president says the company "concluded that a swift decision would be best" after conducting what it calls a thorough review of its overall strategy.

Blu-ray is backed by five major Hollywood studios along with Sony and the parent company of Panasonic.

Only one format had been expected to emerge as the winner, much like VHS trumped Sony's Betamax in the video format battle of the 1980s.

Recently, the Blu-ray disc format has been gaining market share, especially in Japan, where studies showed more than 80% of the purchases were Blu-ray.

On Friday, Wal-Mart Stores, the largest U.S. retailer, said it will sell only Blu-ray DVDs and hardware and no longer carry HD DVD offerings.
