A metro boy is raising money for a cause that is close to his heart, and his classmates are helping.

Students at Harvest Hills Elementary are conducting a fundraiser for the American Heart Association in Casey Amend's honor. In December the 10-year-old was at school when his heart stopped and he slipped into a coma for 16 days.

"Miraculously he woke up one day, and he's been recovering ever since," his grandmother Cecilia Amend said.

Casey had an arrhythmia that caused his heart to stop. He now has a pacemaker and defibrillator to prevent his heart from stopping again. It's enabled him to visit his friends at school who are dedicating their Jump for Heart fundraiser to Casey.

"The school has been tremendous in supporting us an all his friends and teachers have been outstanding," Cecilia Amend said.

During his recovery Casey is helping make a difference for others with heart conditions.

The pledges he received for the Jump For Heart fundraiser will go to a bigger cause that is close to Casey's heart.

"The money is for the heart association and hope further research can help other people who might have heart disease," Casey said.
