NEWALLA, Okla. -- Firefighters from Oklahoma City, Newalla, Moore and Norman extinguished a large grass fire, which had threatened homes in eastern Oklahoma County this morning, authorities said.

At noon, residents and passers-by sprayed water from garden hoses to repel the flames threatening homes in the fire's path.

At 11:30 a.m., gusty winds hampered firefighters' efforts to contain the blaze.

A wind advisory was in effect until 3 p.m. for most of Oklahoma. Winds between 25-30 mph with higher gusts are forecasted.
