One man was killed and another injured after a tractor-trailer hit a bridge on Interstate 40 early Wednesday, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers said.

At 8:30 a.m., one westbound lane of I-40 at Shawnee remained closed, troopers said.

The truck driver may have fallen asleep while driving about 3:30 a.m., troopers said. The truck hit a guard rail at mile marker 176, struck a bridge support and burst into flames with the driver still inside, troopers said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the crash, another driver was injured when his vehicle was rear-ended by a car in the eastbound lanes of I-40, troopers said. The driver was reported in fair condition at a local hospital.

At 6:20 a.m. one lane going eastbound and one lane westbound on I-40 were open.

The structural integrity of the bridge was not damaged, said OHP officials.
