Tony Dungy announced Tuesday he'll be back for at least one more year with the Colts. An impromptu "Dungy is back" afternoon fiesta immediately broke out at my house. Tony Dungy is my favorite coach of all-time. I don't think he's the best coach of all-time, but he's my favorite.
I find him endlessly fascinating. He's the anti-coach. Coaches are supposed to be fiery. Yellers and screamers. Coaches are supposed to be William Wallace. Profanity laced tirades...scowles and veins bulging out of their foreheads...the very picture of stress.
And then there's Tony Dungy.
Where does this guy get off not acting like a game is the most important thing in the world? I respect his Christian views, but I think there are a lot of Christian coaches who stomp and snort (just check out the Sooner Athletic Conference on a Saturday night). It's Dungy's demeanor that is unique. He appears to lead without ever talking above a whisper. He has unparalleled respect among players and coaches and fans alike.
I'm glad Dungy's back not because I think he's a good coach (although he certainly is that). I'm glad he's back because I appreciate the example he sets. Louder isn't always better.
