Every year, Americans spend nearly $10 billion on veterinary care, but your dog can get some relief from people medicine as well.

Here are some of the medicines that can work for dogs:

For constipation, you can use a fiber supplemental; just sprinkle it on their food.

For vomiting and diarrhea, try Kaopectate or Pepto-Bismol.

And for allergies, try a cool oatmeal bath with a product like Aveno or you can give them Benadryl.

But before you give your pet any medication, consult your vet first.

"All of these have been formulated for people," Veterinarian Debbye Turner said. "The average weight of a person is 150 pounds. The average weight of a cat is seven to nine pounds. Dogs are 10 to 150 pounds. You really want to consult with your veterinarian for the right dosage."

There are some things you want to avoid giving your pet.

First, avoid Tylenol, Advil or anything with acetaminophen.

Also, stay away from any creams with zinc. Zinc can irritate their skin.

Finally, don't use insect repellant with deet. It can be toxic, especially if the animal licks its skin.
