Community leaders are asking teens to sign a non-violence pledge as a way to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The pledges will be signed at a rally at 10 am. Monday at Douglass High School - just days after a 17-year-old gang member was shot in the parking lot of Putnam City High School.

"It really saddens my heart to see young people going through so much tragedy and destruction," said the Rev. Theodis Manning. "It's violence. We're asking the community to refrain from it for at least 40 days in respect of Dr. Martin Luther King."

Community leaders will hold the rally a on the 40th anniversary of Dr. King's death.

At the rally youth will take the pledge to put down their weapons and stop fighting, pledge coordinator Marsha Beatty said.

"Our friends are getting shot and killed. Our friends are going to jail and we don't want to see that happen anymore," Beatty said. "If you can stick with something for 40 days, which is six weeks, then there is a good chance you can turn that into a longer term proposition.
