Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel is looking to hire 100 people to work at the Oklahoma County Jail. However, Whetsel said he's having trouble filling the spots.
He told the Associated Press that if he had 100 qualified applicants, he'd hire them immediately.
While staff members are working overtime and reserve deputies are also helping out at the under-staffed jail, there is no threat to jail security, Whetsel said. Becoming a detention center officer could be a stepping stone for those who want to break into the law enforcement field.
"All of our promotions into patrol division, into courthouse security, all law enforcement positions come out of the jail [jobs]," said the sheriff.
The sheriff said the positions have a starting salary of about $25,000.
