Picking a church for you

Posted: Updated:

With so many churches and denominations existing, it can be overwhelming trying to pick a church home. That may explain why only one in three Oklahomans actually attends church.

A co-worker of mine actually sparked today's topic; she's been trying different churches, but just can't seem to find one that works for her. She asked me, "How do you pick a church?" Well, I called on a man who heads up one of the state's largest denominations for some answers, and they're in no particular order.

Whether it's the music that draws you in, or maybe the preacher, the church is a staple for many believers.

"Everywhere you read in Scripture we need one another, in fact, Scripture talks about the one another experience," Dr. Anthony Jordan said. "And so, to say ‘I don't need church' is to say ‘I don't need Christ'."

Jordan says picking a church really comes down to just a few things.

First, look at the Fellowship; check out the different church groups where you can get involved or interest groups that you'd want to join.

Second, look at the leadership; do the church leaders reflect a lifestyle you want to follow? Also, research the pastor.

Third, look at ministry; a place where you can be served and also serve with your own talents.

Fourth, know what Doctrine is being taught.

"I would look for a church that teaches the Bible, or a church that connects me to the Truth of Scripture that teaches the Bible and presents the Gospel on a regular basis," Jordan said. "Sometimes we decide on how funny the preacher is or how entertaining he is, and while there's nothing wrong with that, there must be the teaching of the scripture."
