From allergies to headaches to rashes, how likely is it that the source of your sickness could stem from what you sleep on? I ran across several articles on the internet where people reported that they had health problems. But, once they got rid of their mattresses, the problems seem to be gone. So what's in a mattress that could cause us trouble? I went to the experts to find out.

Roger Mathis with Factory Direct, showed us how Lady Americana, one of the largest mattress manufacturing companies in North America turns out mattresses.

"It's all hypoallergenic foam...," Mathis said.

What goes into the product is as important as the final result, especially since mattresses seem to keep evolving.

"Improvements in the upholstery package, the better bisco, the better latex, better the fibers that they're using now," Mathis said. "They make the beds much more comfortable than what they used to be, all the while making them more durable as well."

Roger says in order to keep up with the latest standards materials some companies use in their mattresses' make up could cause a reaction for a sensitive sleeper.

"I think that some manufactures are using some chemicals in their beds...they should steer clear of anything that has a cotton batting to it or a recycled carpet known as ‘shoddy pad'," Mathis said. "Those are things they really need to stay clear of."

Mattresses made with treated cotton are reportedly at risk of one of the worst offenders to cause reactions. Cotton crops are often sprayed with pesticides.

If you're concerned, read the mattress tag to find out more.

"Anytime they're not getting a good night's sleep or feeling rejuvenated in the morning, it's, it's a good time to get one," Mathis said. "But, also every five to seven years, you need to think about purchasing not just because of the mattress, but because of the changes your body makes."

And, if you think you're body is somehow not agreeing with your mattress, try sleeping somewhere else. It could be related to your mattress or something else like even the detergent you use for your sheets. But, you may still feel it's time to buy a new one.

"It's real simple," Mathis said. "Quality, comfort and value; can't go wrong with that."

Roger says the most popular mattresses are pillow tops and you can expect to pay anywhere from $600-$800 for a good one.
