A Seminole police officer who was shot in a standoff Sunday afternoon is expected to recover from his injuries.

The officer and suspect, Kenneth Gayler, were taken to OU Medical Center after a chase and standoff near the town of Neal in eastern Pottawatomie County. Gayler was in critical condition Sunday night.

An woman who was in Gayler's car was shot and died at the scene, said Jessica Brown, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman.

OSBI and the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Department are investigating the shooting.

Gayler, 23, walked off of a Seminole County prisoner work detail three weeks ago. He had not been seen until the chase began at about 3:11 p.m., Brown said.

The chase started in Seminole and ended about six minutes later near State Highway 3 and Highway 99A.

The police officer was shot in the calf, stomach and face with a buck shot from Gayler's gun, Brown said.

Authorities did not identify the officer or the woman who died, but a dispatcher told NEWS 9 the woman had warrants out for her arrest.
